We just had a very exciting weekend here at Epic Studios! Two more days of televised wrestling events from the World Association of Wrestling (broadcast on Mustard TV) and a visit from one of our favourite writer/director/actor/presenter/comedians (phew) …Stephen Merchant!
Merchant attended Epic Studios’ on Friday night, for what he described as some ‘top drawer British wrestling’ and we couldn’t agree more! It was WAW’s ‘Night of Champions’, and the UK’s finest male wrestlers did not disappoint. WAW’s Bellatrix female wrestlers were on equally good form in their Bellatrix War Games event on Saturday.
After tweeting that he was on his way (with his leotard!) Merchant joined the Epic Studios live audience and revelled in the evening’s entertainment, jumping out of his seat, clapping and cheering in appreciation of the dramas that unfolded throughout the night, along with other spectators of the event. He stayed for the entire show and clearly enjoyed every minute of it, though we unfortunately did not get to see him in his leotard.
Known to be a die-hard wrestling enthusiast, this multi-talented UK national treasure has been spotted at similar events both in the UK and USA. We were delighted to welcome him to our studios and would love to see him back at future events but the chances are that he is about to become very busy! Merchant is playing albino character Caliban in the new Wolverine film ‘Logan’ which is due for release 2nd March – supposedly featuring Hugh Jackman’s last appearance as Wolverine. Caliban is rumoured to be an ally to Wolverine and Charles Xavier in the movie. In an exclusive interview with Helen O’Hara (Empire Magazine), director James Mangold said of the character:
“I’m always interested to find the thing that looks most interesting on the actors. Stephen is a huge man. One of the things that is so wonderful, filming with him for a character like this, is that he’s a good six inches taller than Logan, and huge over Patrick. The little kid in the movie would come up to basically his knee. So, there’s a wonderful sense of scale – but he has heart too…That was a wonderful energy to [have] enter the movie, and someone, who instead of turning things into their own energy, kind of joined ours.”
‘Logan’ is due for release 2nd March and we will be checking it out for sure!Tags: Caliban, Logan, Stephen Merchant, Stephen Merchant loves wrestling, WAW, Wolverine
