Stars Café – A New Venue For Norwich

Stars Café

‘Stars Café, based at Epic Studios, was officially launched on Friday 1st July, when locals were invited to attend for a free drink and bite to eat. Everyone went along, and staff from Epic Studios’ office were immediately drawn in by the bright, inviting décor and warm welcome from manager Oliver Thompson.

A few weeks (and a few baked potatoes) later, I managed to catch investor Felicity Zeqiri for coffee and a quick chat to find out a little more about our new tenants and ask how things are going with their new venture.

You seem to have settled in to the building well over the last few of weeks! What made you choose Epic Studios for your new venture?

Joint investor Nigel Thompson first saw the building while attending the studios to cost some works for Kris (Epic Studios’ operations manager). He immediately thought ‘what a vibrant place for a cafeteria’! Speaking with Kris cemented the feeling that this would be the perfect place for us to commence our journey on a new venture.

I have worked in the hotel and bar industry for the past 25 years and Nigel has been running businesses for the past 30 years. One of those was the Unthank Kitchen on Unthank road Norwich, so we have a fair bit of experience and knowledge behind us. We like a challenge and believe in the expression ‘Make it Happen’.

“Exciting Norwich Venue”

What sets you apart from other cafés on Magdalen street?

Being based in a TV studio is a big part of what makes us a unique, exciting Norwich venue and having an onsite facility to cater for events is good for Epic Studios. Being linked to Access to Music college also makes this a really vibrant place to be and we’re excited about that.

How have things been going since you launched Stars?

Our very first week at Stars’ saw a steady trickle of people coming in to use the cafeteria alongside custom from within the building. There was also a wrestling event, which went well (even though we had little time to prepare) and gave a good indication on how we need to deal with similar future events in the studio.

We were happy with this as a ‘phase 1’ (opening the doors and becoming operational) and are now well into what we see as phase 2.

Phase 2 has been setting up our team to run the operation, and more importantly organising and delivering our food menu. We appointed Oliver Thompson as our day to day manager and Dan Tickle is now working with him on every-day running. Both have vast experience working in this type of environment and we feel that, being young and vibrant, they will mix well with the clientele and the culture of the street. This is something we want to encourage and embrace – especially with the links to Access to Music college next door!

We aim to deliver good wholesome food that will be appreciated by all our customers, (so any food requests are welcomed at this stage too!). There is a 15% discount in place for students and we have had a great response to this so far.

Can we come back for another update soon?

We’ll will keep you posted on our progress, menu updates and any upcoming offers. Meanwhile, a big thank you to everyone involved so far, for taking on our ‘Make it Happen’ approach!

Happy Customers!

Stars Café can be hired for private functions and we caught up with recent customer Kelly last week, to ask her how her anniversary celebrations at the venue had gone. “We had a great night at Stars Café”, she said. “Ollie made us really welcome and we didn’t even pay a hire fee for the room!”

Oliver confirmed, “If you bring more than 25 guests and they spend £100 or more on the bar, there is no hire fee for the room – which can be yours from 7:30pm to 3am!”

Stars is a great place to arrange a catch up with friends or meet with colleagues and has the following points in its favour:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Fully Licensed
  • Cards accepted
  • Student discounts
  • Children welcome
  • Wheelchair access
  • Gluten free options
  • Vegetarian options

Why not pop in and see for yourself what’s on offer, or even make suggestions on how Stars Café can best serve the local community?
