Norwich Band New Scientists’ Winning Formula

New Scientists Feature:

Epic Studios can’t get enough of alternative rock band ‘New Scientists’ and we are clearly not alone. Consisting of 4 college friends – Billy Utting (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Robbie Shaw (drums/backing vocals), Jas Eade (bass/backing vocals) and Charlie Kerrison (lead guitar) – New Scientists seem to be popping up everywhere lately. Not too much of a surprise in our office – where live-music manager (and former A&R manager) Rick Lennox tipped the emerging Norwich-based group as ‘one to watch’ several months back.

New Scientists Norwich

Since their debut Norwich performance in December last year and subsequent recording of an EP entitled ‘Miniature people’, it seems that New Scientists have made an equally good impression with a number of music promoters from East Anglia and beyond. This year they have already played many of Norwich’s best-loved venues and we are delighted to have them returning for a second performance at Epic Studios 7th October, alongside The Meeks.

Billy New Scientists Band

Latest release ‘Again’ was recently featured as ‘track of the week’ on BBC Introducing in Norfolk and has since been produced as a music video by James Hubbard, a 2017 media graduate of (Norwich creative college) Access to Music. The video (shown below) has led to some encouraging responses, including keen interest from Gary Crowley, who gave New Scientists their first national airplay on amazingradio.com over the weekend.

We asked Billy what the meaning was behind the track. “There isn’t one”, he said with a grin, “It’s just a cool sounding song”. We agree.

All 4 members of New Scientists have studied or are currently studying at Access to Music Norwich. Robbie completed the college’s Music Performance course this summer and his band mates are all due to graduate in 2018. When asked about the ways that college-life had impacted on their success, Robbie cited the most important factor for him as being the key introductions it had provided to music industry contacts, including (Head of External Relations and Artist Development) Ian Johnson and subsequently Rick Lennox.

See you 7th October!
