Luke Aikins acknowledges that his latest venture is bordering on insanity…
This Saturday at 00:00 GMT the 42-year-old daredevil will leap from a plane at 25,000 feet, without a parachute, a wingsuit OR anyone jumping alongside who could hand him a chute if anything goes wrong. He will then aim for the 20 storey high net that he hopes will catch him safely.
The event will be broadcast live on Fox network as part of an hour long show called Heaven Sent.
Aikins started jumping out of planes at the age of 12 and has since made 18,000 parachute jumps, performed stunts for films such as ‘Ironman 3’ and trained some of the best skydivers in the world, but this has to be his most daring project yet.
“If I wasn’t nervous I would be stupid. We’re talking about jumping without a parachute, and I take that very seriously. It’s not a joke.” He is quoted as saying in yesterday’s Independent.
When asked why he would do something so dangerous he replied: “I’m proving that we can do stuff that we don’t think we can do if we approach it the right way. I’ve got 18,000 jumps with a parachute…why not wear one this time? …I’m trying to show that it can be done.”
Aikins will be in freefall at approximately 120 mph, battling shifting wind directions, for 2 minutes before landing in the 100x100ft net that will be waiting for him close to Los Angeles.
Hollywood PR man Jimmy Smith told how it felt when one of the crash dummies fell straight through the net during testing: “That was not a good thing to see”. Sounds like an understatement to us!

We salute you Luke, and everyone at Epic Studios and Extreme Video is wishing you an awesome, and more importantly, safe jump on Saturday!
