The second in our 2017 ‘Best of the Year’ countdown conclusion blogs! Epic Studios is excited to reveal the winner from our music event category.
The Skints “The torchbearers for modern British reggae music.” (Clash Music)
Voted number 1 ‘Best Music Event’ at Epic Studios for 2017, was the unforgettable performance from Clash Music favourites The Skints! This London foursome graced our stage with their unique mix of reggae, dub, punk, grime, soul and hip hop in September 2017 and Norwich loved it. In an interview the band told Outline Online what to expect from their Epic Studios performance: “It’s the first UK show on this tour and we are gonna be buzzing to bring out the show we have in store for the first time.”
The buzz was contagious, and this was reflected when votes were counted – with The Skints’ performance a clear ‘music events favourite of the year’.
Number 2: Rews provided our second most enjoyed event of 2017 – based on a truly electrifying performance from the high energy London / Belfast indie rock duo, Shauna Tohill and Colette Williams. Described by Mark Radcliffe as one of his Glastonbury 2015 highlights, Rews fully lived up to expectations when they visited Epic Studios in November. They delivered music to move to from beginning to end of the show, and left us humming ‘Tears’ and ‘Miss you in the dark’ (among others) for days.
Number 3: Tickets for Mammal Hands were in hot demand when we announced their visit earlier in the year. The band drew a huge crowd to the studios and Norwich welcomed them back to their home town with open arms (and ears!). The event became another huge favourite with Epic staff and crew, as we were transported to contemporary jazz, folk, electronic music heaven along with everyone else lucky enough to catch the show. Number 4: The Vapors were described in one review as ‘a revelation’ after their performance at Epic Studios last summer and live music manager, Rick Lennox was delighted with how the night went, at the time describing it as his favourite weekend since he began working here in January. Apparently the feeling was mutual, The Vapors complimented us: “Great hospitality and great venue”,
Joint Number 5: New Scientists, Shalamar and From the Jam…
New Scientists made such an impression on Epic Studios last year that they have become regular performers here. Alongside their shows in 2017, we are also very proud that the local alternative rock foursome recorded ‘Again’ in our studios. We are dedicated new Scientists fans and look forward to seeing more of them in 2018.
Not only did we get to host Shalamar’s second ‘Friends’ tour date (celebrating 35 years since the release of their ‘Friends’ album) we also provided the location for the group’s first music video for 20 years when they came to Norwich back in October (view Shalamar’s ‘The Real Thing’). The event itself was everything we expected it to be, with Jeffrey Daniel, Carolyn Giffrey and Howard Hewett providing an effervescent celebration of some of the best soul, funk and disco memories we can remember. Groovy.
Epic Studios was delighted to have From The Jam back on our stages in 2017 and their November show was extremely popular. The band did earn us a complaint however: “I’ve lost my voice from singing too loudly and my feet are killing me from dancing so much!” Apologies Rachel!
Other events that appeared in Epic Studios’ top ten best music event of the year were: Bad Manners (year on year favourites and always a sell-out), Think Floyd, Wille and the Bandits, Bouncing Souls and The Menzingers.
Thanks to all who visited Epic Studios in 2017 and we wish you all the very best for 2018!
